Syria's Assad visited Moscow October 20, held talks with Putin

Syrian President Bashar Assad visited Moscow on Tuesday evening for talks regarding the Russian aerial operation to support the Syrian army offensive.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad met inMoscow onTuesday evening todiscuss questions regarding the Russian air force and Syrian army operation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said onWednesday.

Russia launched its aerial operation againstterrorist group targets inSyria onSeptember 30. Since then, the Syrian military launched a series ofoffensives againstthe groups acrossthe country. At the talks, Assad said that any military action also presumes further political measures toresolve the Syrian crisis.

"We are ready todo what we can, not only inthe military action tofight terrorism inSyria, butalso inthe political process," Putin said.

Assad thanked the Russian leadership forits aid toSyria, saying that it stands forSyria's unity and independence.

"The terrorism which now spread inthe region would have taken much greater areas and spread toan even greater territory if it was not foryour actions and your decisions," Assad said.

The talks were held inboth a limited and an expanded format, also touching ontopics including bilateral relations and prospective plans foreconomic reconstruction.

"Naturally, the questions [were about] the fight againstterrorist extremist groups, questions regarding the continuation ofsupporting offensive actions ofthe Syrian armed forces," Peskov said.

According toPutins spokesman, members ofRussias upper leadership took part inthe expanded format ofthe talks and "the talks were quite long and the topic ofnegotiations was completely clear."
