No Iranian pilgrim infected with MERS-CoV: Minister

Tehran, Oct 1, IRNA Minister of health announced Thursday that none of the Iranian pilgrims returing from Hajj has been infected with the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Although MERS coronavirus has not been uprooted in Saudi Arabia, there is no concern over the issue that any Iranian pilgrim may be infected with the deadly virus, Hassan Qazizadeh-Hashemi said.

Qazizadeh-Hashemi appreciated the efforts made by the officials at Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization to give due advice to the pilgrims.

Assuring that there is no concern over the issue, the minister urged the people to be serious to follow the medical advices.

This year, 64,000 Iranian pilgrims travelled to Saudi Arabia to attend the largest annual gathering of Muslims.

Unfortunately, 464 Iranians lost their lives in Mina tragic incident due to the inefficiency and mismanagement of the Saudi rulers' in handling the Hajj rituals.

The tragic stampede in Mina happened last Thursday when, according to reports, two large groups of pilgrims arrived together at a crossroads in Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, on their way to performing the 'stoning of the devil' ritual at Jamarat.

According to official reports, some 241 Iranian pilgrims are still missing.

The Hajj disaster has triggered public anger in the Islamic World that condemned the incompetence and mismanagement of the Saudi officials in administrating Muslims largest annual ritual.
