President Rouhani orders follow up of Mina tragedy

Tehran, Sept 29, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday ordered the responsibl officials to continue with their follow up of the deadly Hajj stampede in Mina near Mecca, Saudi Arabia and to accelerate the transfer of the Iranian pilgrims killed or injured during the incident.

The special committee in charge of pursuing Mina disaster convened on Tuesday chaired by the president as soon as Rouhani returned from his visit to New York to attend the 70th UN General Assembly.

During the meeting, the committee members briefed the president on the latest conditions of the Iranian pilgrims and the follow-up made by the officials.

Noting that the return of the bodies of all the Iranian victims is Iran's top priority, Rouhani called for using all the country's capacities to follow up the case.

The president also underlined the need for further negotiations with the Saudi officials, saying the diplomatic apparatus has to make every effort to pave the way for cooperation between the Saudi government and Supreme Leader's representative to Hajj affairs.

Rouhani made it clear that the special committee has to pursue the conditions of all the Iranians who remain missing.

The Hajj stampede in Mina on Thursday killed nearly 2,000 pilgrims.

So far, 239 Iranian pilgrims have been confirmed dead with 14 others wounded.

Some 241 Iranian pilgrims are still missing.
