Iran will resist foreign pressures, sanctions: President

Iran will resist foreign pressures, sanctions: President
Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that just like the Sacred Defense period, the Iranian nation would stand and resist pressures and sanctions united and with power.

Sacred Defense is a common Iranian term for the eight years of imposed war in which Iraq's then-president Saddam Hussein, the aggressor, received extensive international support for his invasion on Iran. It occurred less than two years after triumph of the Islamic Revolution in the country.

President made his remarks in a ceremony held downtown Tehran this morning to mark Shahrivar 31 (according to the Iranian calendar), which is the day when the regime of the toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in 1980.

The day is marked nationwide as the beginning of the Sacred Defense Week.

Referring to Irans recent nuclear negotiations with the P5+1 which led to making the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the world major powers on July 14, President Rouhani said unity of the Iranian people, expertise of the Iranian diplomats and the guidance of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei led to the nuclear agreement that secured the rights of the Iranian nation.

He hailed recent UN Security Council resolutions in support of the removal of anti-Iran sanctions, adding that the resolutions proved the fact that the sanction policy against Iran was wrong from the beginning.

President Rouhani noted that a year ago, world powers demanded Iran to decrease the number of its centrifuges in Fordo to 100 but today Iran has six thousand active centrifuges.

A year ago, world powers asked Iran to shut down Arak heavy water reactor but today they have accepted to modernize the reactor, he added.

President underlined that Iran's Armed Forces are ready to defend other countries as well against terrorist attacks if the latter asks for Tehran's help.

Iranian nation has no plan to attack any country but it will defend its territories with power, he added.

President Rouhani referred to the Iranian Armed Forces as the biggest force against terror and terrorism.

Today, we tell the world that the biggest anti-terrorism force is the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic, the President said.

The Sacred Defense enhanced Iranian nation to a cohesive resistant nation against foreign aggression and all Iranians from various sects defended the country against Iraq imposed war, he noted.

President said that after the 1979 revolution in Iran, Islamic Republic was accused of pursuing a policy of war with its neighboring states but Iran has never started any war with any country and it was even attacked and invaded by the regime of Iraq's toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

He underlined that Islamic Republic have always wished peace for its neighbors and respected the sovereignty of other nations.
The President noted that the world powers had helped the Iraqi dictator on his war against Iran after the Islamic Revolution dreaming that they could defeat the Iranian nation.

During the imposed war on Iran, it has become clear who was the aggressor, which ideology sought to invade and meddle in the internal affairs of other countries and who were those who had no mercy not only on their neighboring states but also on their own people, the president said.
He stressed that the strong faith in God was a prominent feature of the Iranian soldiers and commanders during the imposed war.

As we have helped the governments of Syria and Iraq against terrorism, upon their own requests, if, heavens forbid, terrorism emerges in other neighboring countries they could again pin their hopes on the Iranian Armed Forces and be sure that the big powers would be of no help to them, President Rouhani said.
