Araqchi appointed as head of JCPOA headquarters

Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA - Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affaris Abbas Araqchi was appointed as head of a headquarters in charge of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), it was announced on Tuesday.

The appointment was made by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who left here for New York earlier on Tuesday along with Araqchi and Head of the Iranian nuclear expert team Hamid Baeedinejad to attend the first meeting of the Joint Commission with the members of the Group 5+1.

The Joint Commission is established to carry out the functions assigned to it in the JCPOA including its Annexes.

The Commission is comprised of representatives from Iran, those of the world sextet (US, UK, Russia, China and France plus Germany) and the European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini.

The first Joint Commission is due to be held in New York at the level of deputy foreign ministers. The exact time of the meeting has not been fixed.

Major responsibilities of the commission is to review and approve the final design for the modernized heavy water research reactor and the design of the subsidiary laboratories prior to the commencement of construction, and review and approve the projects on new centrifuges are among the Joint Commission's responsibilities.
