Judge sentences criminals to reading rather than long prison terms in Iran

An Iranian court judge has come up with a novel idea to get offenders back on the right path without lengthy jail terms: he issued an order that allows for the replacement of jail sentences for light crimes, with reading.

Qasem Naqizadeh, a judge inthe provincial city ofGonbad-e Kavus, has set upa new ruling that stipulates individuals convicted ofminor crimes should buy and read books instead ofserving long terms inprison, IRNA agency reported.

Judge Naqizadeh pointed outthat such punishments are a good alternative toimprisonment, which has irreversible physical and psychological impact onconvicts and their families."

The alternative sentence can be applied forteenagers and people who had committed infractions, misdemeanors and minor felonies. Recidivists are excluded fromthe list ofthose who are eligible.

Under the terms ofthe ruling, violators are obliged tobuy five books froma list ofapproved texts, then read all ofthem and write reviews that later are read byjudges. Offenders are obligated toadd quotes fromthe Prophet Muhammads froma collection ofsayings called hadith totheir book summaries. That makes punishments both educational and spiritual, BBC News noted.

The list ofapproved texts was compiled bylocal court judges, and all the books are supposed tobe left behindafter reading forfuture law violators. The selection includes pieces written ina very simple way aswell assophisticated scientific ones, Naqizadeh told IRNA.

"The books were chosen so that all prisoners could make use ofthem, regardless oftheir literacy level, knowledge or age," he added.

Naqizadeh said the measure would help tolower the number offights betweendetainees. And according toAl Bawaba website, the measure may eventually lead toa decrease inthe number ofprisoners inthe country.
