Iran, Germany to start new power talks

Irans media said on Saturday that a trade delegation will arrive in the country from Germany on Monday to discuss a new round of talks over the development of electricity projects in the Islamic Republic.

The delegation will be led by Nils Schmid, the deputy minister-president and minister of finance and economics of Germanys Baden-Wrttemberg State.

Schmid is scheduled to meet Irans Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian and discuss the avenues for the participation of Germany companies from Baden-Wrttemberg in Irans electricity projects.

The two will also discuss investments in Irans other key sectors including the auto, the chemicals and the pharmaceutical industries.

This follows the visit in July by Germanys Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel who led a major trade delegation to Tehran for a landmark state visit.

Gabriel was accompanied by the top officials of Germanys leading industrial enterprises including Siemens, Linde, VW, Daimler and GIZ.

Iranian officials said last month that the country plans to sign deals with German companies for setting up new electricity generation plants. They said this will be part of Irans plans to add up to 37,000 megawatts to its national power grid.

The plans call for generating about 5,000 megawatts from renewable energy sources with the help of German companies.

Iran is the biggest producer of electricity in the Middle East, generating over 70,000 megawatt-hours. Thermal stations account for 85% of the electricity produced in Iran and hydropower plants for 14% of that.

Nevertheless, between 14% to 18% of the electricity produced in Iran is wasted during transmission.
