Iran mulls Russian military aircraft purchase, joint space projects

Iran is holding active talks with Russia on the purchase of military aircraft.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Iran is holding active talks withRussia onthe purchase ofat least two types ofmilitary aircraft, Iranian Vice President Sorena Sattari told the Russian Kommersant daily.

"The relevant talks are going well," Sattari said, adding that he cannot give any further details onthe possible contract atthis point.

The vice president also said that Tehran is mulling the purchase ofthe Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 plane a twin-engine regional passenger jet, which became available commercially in2011.

"If Russia offers us [Iran] good financial terms, a lot ofour airlines would be willing totake them [Superjet 100 aircraft]," he told Kommersant.

The sanctions imposed onthe Iran bythe United States in1979 blocked Tehran frompurchasing new airplanes and spare parts torepair the old ones. The lifting ofanti-Iran sanctions, stipulated inthe final agreement onIrans nuclear program reached inJuly, will give Tehran a chance torenew its aircraft fleet.

On Thursday, Russian Deputy Minister ofIndustry and Trade Andrei Boginsky told journalists atthe MAKS-2015 air show outsideMoscow that Iran is considering purchasing dozens ofRussian Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.

According toSattari, Iran is also interested inusing Russian rocket carriers tolaunch satellites intoorbit.

"It is important that this is done aspart ofjoint projects. That is, so that we jointly develop and create satellites and cooperate inthe sphere ofspace rocket construction," Irans Vice President told the Kommersant newspaper.

Sattari stressed that Russia has no competitors inthe sphere ofspace technology.
