Best museums and galleries in Shiraz

Tehran, Aug 27, IRNA - Shiraz in the southern province of Fars is the spiritual home of Persian arts.

It should come as no surprise that Shiraz houses a number of excellent museums and galleries, showcasing the best of Iranian history and culture such as exquisite carpets, handwritten volumes of Quran, historic houses and Achaemenid weapons, Tehran-based English newspaper, Iran Daily, reported.

Shirazs best venues for gallery-goers and art lovers are:

Pars Museum
Pars Museum is located in Nazar Garden, the center of Shiraz. It provides an excellent example of Zand architecture.

Nazar Garden is also the burial site of Zand king, Karim Khan. The 18th-century garden is a delight to wander around, but the decorated, octagonal central pavilion is the highlight.

Converted into a museum in the 1930s, it displays examples of Zand weaponry, colorful frescoes, watercolor paintings, and some old, hand-written volumes of the Quran. The museum is inexpensive and well-worth a visit.

Haft Tanan Museum
Haft Tanan is a stone museum located near Quran Gate at the entrance to the city.

It houses a broad collection of stone blocks and reliefs. There are calligraphic styles carved onto the stones, including Kufic and Nastaliq scripts.

The museum takes its name (seven bodies) from the seven unmarked gravestones situated there, which are said to belong to seven mystics from Shiraz history.

Meshkinfam Art Museum
The historical house of Forugh-ol-Molk Qavami, which dates back to the Qajar era, now functions as a private art gallery.

Not far from Shah Cheragh Shrine, the museum exhibits works by contemporary Shirazi artists, as well as fine examples of Persian calligraphy and relief carvings.

The unique blend of exquisite art and architecture, and history and modernity, merit a trip to this memorable gallery.

Persepolis Museum
Situated in Persepolis, the Persepolis Museum houses a rich array of unearthed objects from the Achaemenid era.

A great way to add a little historical context and color to your tour of the ancient city, the museum exhibits unearthed artifacts including weapons, clay tablets, dishes, pots, and sculptures.

More wonderful still is the fact that the museum building is a reconstruction of an Achaemenid structure that once stood there.

Afif-Abad Military Museum
Afif-Abad Complex boasts a large garden with some exemplary Persian landscaping decorated with orange trees, palm trees, and flower beds.

The palace at the center of the garden is now home to a magnificent military museum, chronicling the weaponry of Irans armed forces from the Safavid era through to the modern period.

Enthusiasts of military history can spend a day exploring the evolution of Irans armaments.
