Qashqavi: Iran to extradite 100 prisoners from Iraqi Kurdistan

Tehran, Aug 9, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi announced on Sunday that 100 Iranian inmates will be extradited to the country from the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

'Based on an agreement signed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Iraqi central government and the Kurdistan Region, two of the three stages of the extradition of convicts have been fulfilled and in the third stage, 100 convicts will be extradited to the Islamic Republic of Iran's officials at the borders,' Qashqavi underlined.

He said that most of the convicts are accused of drug trafficking, illegal border crossing and other crimes and were kept in Dahuk, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah prisons.

Qashqavi also said that when the 100 Iranian prisoners are transferred to Iran, the number of all extradited inmates will reach total people.

He also announced that 18 Iraqi convicts were extradited to their homeland recently.

Iran and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region signed an agreement on extradition of prisoners in July.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country.
