Shamkhani: Terrorism is led, supported from a joint base

Tehran, Aug 5, IRNA Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said in Tehran on Tuesday that terrorism is led and supported from a joint base and therefore campaign against it should be based on a common regional strategy.

Addressing joint meeting of deputy heads of Russian and Afghan high security councils, Shamkhani referred to bitter experience of foreign forces' presence in Afghanistan under pretext of campaign against terrorism and escalation of violence and terror in the country and said, 'Regional cooperation and adoption of joint strategies by regional states is the only way of fighting terrorism and restoring security and stability to the region.'

He underlined the need for uprooting the ideological base of terrorism, which is the main factor for recruiting soldiers from among the depressed youth in dictatorial states and said the terrorist groups seek to affect the economic capacity and man power of the regional states.

He said to fight terrorism, regional leaders have taken proper decisions, which should be implemented soon through efforts of authoritative bodies.
He went on to say that independent Iran, powerful Russia and stable and secure Afghanistan form the basis of tripartite cooperation.

He hoped that the current meeting will serve as an initial step towards implementing new regional cooperation, preparing necessary grounds for alignment of other countries to gain tangible results.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary of Security Council of the Russian Federation, Yevgeny Lukyanov, and Second Deputy of National Security Council (NSC) of Afghanistan Wakil Mohammad Ibrahim Qasimi in the meeting welcomed Tehran's initiative to form tripartite meeting, which will have good impact on expansion of regional cooperation against terrorism.

The tripartite meeting of Lukyanov, Qasimi and deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Iravanai was aimed at assessing security condition of the region, consolidation of trilateral cooperation and drawing up a roadmap for campaign against terrorism.
