Democrats in Congress will back Iran nuclear agreement: Lew

US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew believes that Democrats in Congress will support the conclusion of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

What Ive heard from those who are actually listening to arguments I think enough for this to be sustained, Lew said on Wednesday.

He means that the White House would gain enough support from Democratic lawmakersto sustain a veto if Congress votes to reject the nuclear agreement.

Washington and its five negotiating partners concluded the nuclear negotiations with Iran in Vienna on July 14.

Iran sanctions are set to be removed in exchange for some limitations on the countrys nuclear energy program.

The Obama administration is working full-time to sell the agreement to Congress, which is set to vote on it in September after reviewing it.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry, Lew, and Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz testified before a House panel about the Vienna accord.

Kerry also appeared at a third hearing held by the Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday.

Democratic support has a significant role in the September vote because most Republicans are against the agreement.

President Barack Obama once again defended the unprecedented deal in a personal presentation before lawmakers in the East Room on Wednesday.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Obama made a strong and forceful case for supporting the agreement.

It is clear that this agreement offers the best long-term plan to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon, she said.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler also noted that the US president said you should vote based on your real conviction not on politics.
