Jewish Democrats give John Kerry earful on Iran deal

WASHINGTON Jewish Democrats in the House gave Secretary of State John Kerry an earful Tuesday, pointedly questioning the nuclear deal with Iran.

Bronx Rep. Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Kerry inspection and sunset provisions in the pact were troublesome.

I have a fundamental concern that 15 years from now, Iran will essentially be off the hook, Engel said at a four-hour hearing that illustrated the bipartisan resistance to the international agreement.

California Rep. Brad Sherman raised concerns about Irans backing of terrorism, naming Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthi, and those are just organizations that began with the letter H.

Florida Rep. Ted Deutch said certain terms of the Iran pact are not at all clear and when the arms embargo comes off, they are considerably more dangerous.

Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) asked Kerry bluntly: If this is such a good deal, why is Israel so opposed to it?

Battle-tested from last weeks tense exchanges in a Senate hearing, Kerry sharpened his defense of the deal, which has to pass Congress with enough votes to withstand a presidential veto.

He warned that walking away from the deal would isolate the United States from its international allies and Irans countdown to nuclear weapons starts tomorrow.

If we walk away, we walk away alone, he said. Our partners are not going to be with us.

Kerry also insisted that Israel would be better off once the agreement is in place.

I am absolutely convinced beyond any doubt this deal makes Israel safer and the region and the world, he said.

One influential Jewish Democrat agreed.

Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.), the longest-serving Jewish Democrat in Congress, announced his support of the deal as the best option to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Congress has until Sept. 17 to endorse or reject the pact. Rejection would prevent Obama from waiving most US-imposed sanctions on Iran.
