Iraq's economic development to help terror fight: Iranian speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani referred to economic development and job creation as contributing factors in the battle against terrorism.

"Economic development and combating poverty in Iraq could help prevent the Iraqi youth from joining the terrorist groups," Larijani said in a Monday meeting in Tehran with Hakim al-Zamili, the chairman of the Iraqi parliament's security and defense commission.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's economic potentials and capacities can play a very significant role to that end, the Iranian speaker added.

He also referred to "unity among the political groups and solidarity among the Iraqi ethnicities" as other crucial factors in the Arab country's stability.

Zamili, for his part, hailed Iran as a major country in the region and a "reliable base" in the eyes of Iraqis for the fight against terrorist groups.

He further called for closer military cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad, saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran "can greatly assist the Iraqi government in reconstructing the Army and fighting off terrorist groups."

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.

The ISIL militants made advances in northern and western Iraq over summer 2014, after capturing swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq's territorial integrity and prosperity.
