Tehran, July 25, The Iran Project – 18-month tough and complex process to sign a landmark nuclear deal is just the beginning of the story. The significant question is what differences the agreement makes? Despite the chorus of critics, many commentators and watchers agree that the agreement will have the widespread economic, security and social consequences.
The economic implications
The nuclear accord will ease the sanctions, a move which leads to revitalize the Iranian economy. This partly answers the question as to “how the nuclear deal will benefit Iran’s economy?”. Although this is true that the harshest regime of sanctions couldn’t bring Iran to its knees, the complex nature of financial, shipping, energy and technology sanctions have significantly hindered the Iran’s economic progress. Now, the deal begins to ease the crippling implications of the oppressive sanctions against Iran.
Primarily, the very announcement of nuclear conclusion enhances the public confidence. This psychological impact is a milestone to boost the new economic activities such as expansion of exports and especially opening the doors to the domestic or foreign investments and trade. This brings about Iran’s reengagement in world economy, strengthening the geopolitical status of the country as a transit corridor for transmission of various goods and energy pipelines.
In terms of oil and gas production, lifting the sanctions will allow Iran to raise the oil and gas production, increasing the national revenues which lead to the economic growth in long term. In short, gradual easing the sanctions creates a momentum that will accelerate the move toward achievement of the economic development. Yet, the reality is that Iran’s economic challenges go far beyond the sanctions related issues and major parts of the economy illnesses have nothing to do with the imposed sanctions.
Although medicine hasn’t been included in the list of sanctions, the transferring money related difficulties made the drugs import practically impossible. Thus, due to the shortages of drugs stemming from the barbaric sanctions the lives of six millions of Iranian patients were put in serious danger. In addition, the statistics indicates that from 2009 to 2013, more than 300,000 Iranians left the country in pursuit of greater chances abroad and this is the highest rate of “brain drain” in the world. It is expected that the sanctions removal ensures the easy access of patients to the necessary drugs and encourages the intelligent individuals to pursue their goals in their home country.
Admittedly, to choose diplomatic means to deal with the nuclear dispute and to spend the years to secure its nuclear rights and legitimacy will have positive impacts on the world’s public opinions toward Iran. This reality will make Iran at the center of attention in the region and the whole world.
Security and regional impacts implications
This is a truth that reaching a good deal lets Iran address other significant crisis in the region. This is why foreign minister Zarif stated that Iran is ready to seek “new approaches” in the battle against ISIS once the good deal is reached. Now that the historic accord is achieved, Iran can play a more constructive role in other regional challenges.
Given the fact that Iran has had a long history of combat against terrorism and extremism, its reengagement will effectively open new horizons to confront ISIS. The Middle East after the agreement may also witness more severe measures against the illicit drugs and more efforts to strengthen the military cooperation and ties by Iran. The new cooperation will potentially include efforts to fight against terrorism and expansionist interventions, proving the fact that the post nuclear environment vows firmly to accelerate the move toward a more stabilized Middle East.
