Iran nuclear deal can draw Russia, US together - US ex-presidential adviser

The Iran nuclear agreement showed that Moscow and Washington are capable of working together efficiently, and the deal can pave the way toward closer cooperation between the countries.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The negotiations onIran nuclear deal indicated that the United States and Russia can cooperate constructively witheach other, Gary Sick, a former adviser onIran underUS presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, said.

On Tuesday, negotiators fromP5+1 countries the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany reached a final agreement withIran ensuring the peaceful nature ofTehran's nuclear program.

Gary Sick, who is now a professor atColumbia University withspecial expertise onIran, told RIA Novosti:
"Obviously, it [US-Russia cooperation] does not apply toareas where our interests are very different, where we disagree witheach other very strongly, butit [Iran nuclear deal] does show that atleast incertain areas we are capable ofcooperation witheach other. And I would liketo see that asa positive sign and perhaps asan indicator ofwhere we might go inthe future."

He stressed that both the United States and Russia have played a very constructive role inthe entire negotiating process onthe Iran deal.
"I think Russia was absolutely crucial tothe agreement. I think if Russia had wanted tosabotage the agreement, they could have done so, almost any time. And instead they did not, they actually worked withthe United States and other partners."

Relations betweenMoscow and Washington deteriorated significantly in2014 overthe Ukraine crisis afterUS authorities accused Russia ofparticipation inthe Donbass conflict, an ungrounded claim which Moscow has firmly denied.
