Kerry to Congress: Dont turn your backs on Iran nuclear conclusion

US Secretary of State John Kerry urges Congress not to reject the outcome of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

"I really don't believe that people will turn their backs on an agreement which has such extraordinary steps in it with respect to Iran's program as well as access and verification," Kerry told reporters in Vienna on Tuesday after the announcement of the conclusion of talks.

The text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was finalized earlier on Tuesday. According to the text, Iran will be recognized by the United Nations as a nuclear power and will continue its uranium enrichment program.

The US Congress now has 60 days to review the text and vote to either approve or disapprove of the agreement.

Kerry, who has spent the last 19 days negotiating in Vienna, said it was "the good deal that we sought."

Had we been willing to settle for a lesser deal, we would have finished this negotiation a long time ago, he said.

We have worked very hard to get here. A resolution to this type of challenge never comes easily, not when the stakes are so high. Not when the issues are so technical, and not when every decision made affects the regional and global security so directly, Kerry stated.

The top US diplomat said the US and the rest of the P5+1 - the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany- were determined to get this done.

I believe our persistence paid off," he said.

Addressing the American nation from the White House, President Barack Obama also said he would veto any legislation from US lawmakers that "prevents the successful implementation of the deal."
