Parliament approval necessary for possible nuclear deal: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) A senior Iranian lawmaker said on Sunday that if Tehran and six world powers reach a final agreement over Iran's nuclear energy program, the deal should be ratified by the country's parliament.

"The (possible) nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) must be examined by the parliament," Ebrahim Aqamohammadi, a member of Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told the Tasnim News Agency.

He added that unless the deal is ratified by the legislature, it could not be implemented.

Iran and the six powers have been negotiating over the past 22 months to end more than a decade of standoff over Tehran's civilian nuclear program once and for all.

The two sides are busy negotiating in the Austrian capital of Vienna to work out the long-awaited deal.

After missing a self-imposed deadline of June 30 and extra days of tight diplomatic meetings afterwards, the parties decided on Friday to continue the talks until Monday in the hope of finalizing the accord.
