France inks agreement to develop Iran's main rail stations

TEHRAN (Tasnim) A French railroad company on Wednesday signed an agreement to develop Iran's main rail stations.

The agreement was signed by the representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways and the French company.

Locating new railroad stations in the Iranian capital of Tehran with the aim of improving rail access, and designing multimodal rail stations in the city in order to provide easy access to different rail stations in the urban and suburban transportation system are among the works to be carried out by the French company.

According to the agreement, the company should also develop rail transport systems in other major Iranian cities, like the holy cities of Mashhad and Qom.

France has the second largest European railroad network, with a total of 29,901 kilometers of railroad.

Back in December 2014, a railroad connecting Iran to Central Asia came into service in a ceremony attended by the presidents of Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

The North-South Transnational Corridor is a 920 km-long railroad line connecting the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan with Iran and the Persian Gulf.

Experts believe these transportation routes show that anti-Iran sanctions have had no bearing on the regional nations' enthusiasm for taking the opportunity to cooperate with Tehran.
