The looming specter of another war by Israel

Tehran, June 24, The Iran Project - The wars in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and the Palestinian occupied territories are still underway and the international community's attention is elsewhere while Israel is tirelessly thinking about another war. Past experiences have also proven how much Israel is fond of waging war during summer time. Thus, should we expect another dispute on the top of all other tensions in the region?

There are reasons why it is argued that Israel's new bellicosity in the regions shouldn't surprise anyone.

The Israel next battle may not be with Hamas in Gaza but with Hezbollah in Lebanon. On May 12, The New York Times quoted an Israeli military official, saying that Israel is preparing for "what it sees an almost inevitable next battle with Hezbollah". Israel claimed they publicized the Hezbollah's buildup in order to prevent another conflict and to make the International community's aware of it. But preventing war is absolutely of no concern to Israel, so what actually lies behind this scenario?

"A nuclear Iran" is what Israel and Saudi Arabia have equally threatened by and have done whatever necessary to kill the potential nuclear deal with Iran. After frequent failures in diplomatic solutions to persuade US and West to stop talks to Iran, it seems understandable why they are invoking a game changing plan. In their minds, the new military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah strongly shifts the momentum in US Congress against the pending nuclear deal with Iran. Moreover, while both Iran and Hezbollah have been involving in Iraq and Syria over the past years, opening a new front in Lebanon may exhaust them and weaken their military capabilities. Thus, from the Israel perspective, the agenda for a military confrontation meets the expectations and thereby will stop Iran's increasing maneuverability in the region.

According to IDF (Israel Defense Forces), it expects "Hezbollah to launch 1200 rockets a day and hundreds of Israelis could die". Besides that capability, the drones are the new weapons for the group to carry attacks, as it recently applied them to bomb a building used by the Al-Qaeda affiliated rebels in Syria. However, it's not certain if Iran's latest military development and the new Hezbollah's armed strength deter Israel from embarking on a new adventure.

Ultimately, it is unknown when the hostility is going to break out once again. And nobody is quite certain whether the Israeli adventurous measures lead to a total war. But what is clear is Hezbollah and Iran do not intend tostand by helplessly in face of Israel's air strikes, because as General Yahya Rahim Safavi, military adviser to Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, recently warned "any Israeli attack would unleash a firestorm of missiles on its cities". It is also likely that the Israel War in Lebanon leads to the Takfiris involvement, as their widespread links and regular contacts have been revealed in Syria recently. In case the US get engaged in the war, the actual effect is on the outcomes of the next presidential election, and in the short run, it may decline the confidence in President Obama.
