Iran rejects EU's "biased" human rights report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iran's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman dismissed allegations of human rights violation raised in a recent European Union report against Iran.

"We reject the report and at the same time call on the European Union officials to adopt a more realistic and logical approach towards Iran," Marziyeh Afkham said in her weekly press conference on Wednesday.

Her comments came after the 'EU annual report on human rights and democracy in the world in 2014', published on June 22, criticized what it called "lack of fundamental freedoms and violations of basic human rights including women's rights" in Iran.

"There is no political or human rights dialogue with Iran at the moment, which makes EU objectives on human rights and democracy particularly difficult to achieve," the report added.

In response to the allegations, Afkham said, "This report, in our view, is one-sided and biased and contain untrue data and conclusions."

She said a single country or a group of states does not have the credibility to evaluate human rights situation in other countries or interfere in the internal affairs of others.

Human rights is a worldwide issue that should be dealt with quite impartially, fairly and without any double-standards, she said.

"Even the European countries themselves commit human rights violations," Afkham went on to say.
