Russia, Iran negotiate terms of S-300 non-delivery lawsuit's withdrawal

Tehran and Moscow continue negotiations on the mechanism of a lawsuit withdrawal for non-delivery of S-300 air defense systems, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Murteza Sarmadi told Sputnik Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russia and Iran sealed a contract forthe delivery ofthe S-300 surface-to-air missile systems in2007.

Three years later, then-President Dmitry Medvedev put the deal onhold afterthe UN Security Council had introduced an embargo onarms deliveries toIran overthe alleged development ofnuclear weapons bythe country.

Following the move, Iran sued Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport atthe OSCE Court ofConciliation and Arbitration inGeneva.

"We continue tonegotiate withthe Russians onrecalling a lawsuit onS-300 that was filed byTehran afterRussia refused totransfer the systems ona specified date."

Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban onS-300 deliveries inApril shortly afterthe P5+1 group ofinternational negotiators and Iran had reached a framework nuclear agreement.

A source familiar withthe situation said inmid-June that Russia and Iran were intalks onresuming the implementation ofthe S-300 delivery contract. According tothe source, Russian officials insisted onthe withdrawal ofthe lawsuit and signing ofa new contract instead.

"We touched uponthe issue of [introducing] amendments tothe contract, the new prices tobe set, and discussed the mechanism ofthe lawsuit withdrawal," he added.
