Minister says Iran will need 400 passenger planes in next decade

Tehran, June 16, IRNA Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbass Akhoundi said in Paris on Tuesday that in the next 10 years, Iran will need as many as 400 passenger planes which needs at least a $20 billion investment.

Akhoundi, speaking on the sidelines of his visit to the 51st International Paris Air Show Le Bourget 2015, said the Air Show which opened on Monday serves as a good market.

He noted that now the average age of Iranian air fleet is about 20 years and should the ongoing trend continue, the age of Iranian air fleet will reach 30 years in the next 10 years and in that case many Iranian planes will not be capable of offering any services.

He said good meetings were held on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show over the past one day with those active in the industry and suppliers adding that very good events will take place in the future.

He added he was scheduled to meet with officials of major railway and road transportation companies.

The Paris Air Show (Salon international de l'aronautique et de l'espace, Paris-Le Bourget) is the world's oldest air show.

Established in 1909, it is currently held every odd year at Le Bourget Airport in north Paris, France. The 2015 Paris Air Show, from 1521 June 2015, became the 51st.

The format is similar to the Farnborough International Airshow in Britain and the ILA Berlin Air Show, which both would happen in 2016. The Paris event starts with four professional days closed to the general public, and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday the public, including children, are allowed in.

The Paris Air Show is organised by the French aerospace industry's primary representative body, the Groupement des industries franaises aronautiques et spatiales GIFAS. According to Gifas, the 2011 Paris show attracted 151,500 professional visitors and 204,000 members of the general public, and 3,250 journalists from 80 countries.

It is a large commercial event, with a major purpose being to demonstrate military and civilian aircraft to potential customers. It claims to be the most prestigious aircraft exposition in the world. Major aircraft sales contracts are announced by manufacturers during the show. All major international manufacturers, as well as representatives of the military forces of many countries, attend the Paris Air Show.

It is a contrast to the Airventure event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. That event, the world's largest airshow, with attendance of over 500,000 and 12,000 airplanes, does not primarily focus on sales of military and commercial airliners.
