Iraqi PM due in Tehran on Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties, regional developments

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi will pay an official visit to Tehran next week to explore avenues for broadening all-out ties between the two countries and discuss regional developments in meetings with senior Iranian officials.

The Iraqi prime minister is slated to arrive in the Iranian capital on Wednesday.

During his stay in Tehran, Al-Abadi will meet Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri and other senior officials.

Al-Abadi’s visit to Iran is assessed as to be crucially important, given Tehran’s major role in regional developments, specially in Iraq’s war on ISIL terrorist group.

The Iraqi prime minister visited Iran in late October at the invitation of the Iranian first vice-president. It was his first official visit to a foreign country since he took office on August 11, 2014.

Al-Abadi was accompanied by Iraqi ministers of oil, electricity, economy and commerce.

Al-Abadi’s visit to Iran was followed by exchange of visits by the two countries’ senior officials, including Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan and Jahangiri as well as Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jafari, Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri and President Fouad Massoum.

The Iraqi prime minister on several occasions has appreciated Iran’s constructive role in Iraq’s present sensitive situation.

In March, Abadi in a phone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed the necessity for the further deepening of relations and cooperation with Tehran in all fields.

During the phone conversation, Abadi also presented a report on the latest situation of the Iraqi nation’s fight against terrorism in different parts of the country, and appreciated Tehran for its supports in this regard.

President Rouhani, for his part, described fighting against terrorism as a vital necessity for all countries, specially in the region.

“All should cooperate to uproot terrorism in every part of the world and establish sustainable tranquility for the nations,” he added.
