TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) lieutenant commander branded the Saudi-led military campaign on Yemen as part of a broader plot that Washington has masterminded to retain its hegemony in the Islamic world.

"Saudi Arabia's attacks on Yemen are part of the US plan to revive its hegemony in the Islamic world," Brigadier General Hossein Salami said Sunday in a gathering of clerics in Iran's central city of Qom.

The commander also slammed the Saudi-led offensive against Yemen as "the most foolish and unfair war in history."

Saudi Arabia's military campaign against Yemen is essentially a failed operation, the commander stressed, saying, The Al Saud government thought it could control developments in Yemen but it was all illusion and they failed to achieve any of their objectives."

Salami also lauded the Yemeni people for their fortitude, saying the foreign invasion has further united the Arab country's nation.

The Saudis have launched strikes on Yemen from the air and ground, but do not even dare to retake their military bases conquered by the Ansarullah movement, he went on to say.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies began to launch air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

According to Yemen's Freedom House Foundation, the Saudi airstrikes have claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Yemeni people so far while more than 7,000 others have been wounded, most of them civilians.

In the latest Saudi-led attacks, at least 44 people were killed and 180 others wounded in air strikes on Sana'a early Sunday.
