President Rouhani: Islamic Republic system based on democratic rule

Tehran, June 1, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani said that the Islamic Republic system is based on democracy and people’s votes.

President Rouhani made the remarks addressing his cabinet in a weekly meeting in Tehran on Sunday.

President Rouhani’s states come as two important elections will be held in Iran in the current year.

The Iranian president noted that holding the elections in the best possible manner is one of the important political duties of the government.

In related remarks in September 2013, President Rouhani underlined that he and his cabinet members are acting upon the guidelines of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

‘Considering the Supreme Leader’s general policies, wherever I assume necessary, I take action for (materializing) the Islamic Republic’s interests, the nation’s rights and obviation of problems,’ Rouhani said upon arrival at Mehrabad airport after returning Tehran from a 5-day New York visit during which he held important meetings with different world leaders and held a phone talk with US President Barack Obama.

He stressed the necessity for ‘wise flexibility’ based on Ayatollah Khamenei’s emphasis on showing ‘heroic flexibility’ in foreign policy, and said, ‘We won’t backtrack from our principles, causes and national honor.’

‘We can resolve complicated problems with the nation’s backing and support and in light of the Supreme Leader’s wise guidelines,’ Rouhani said.
