Iran FM fails to convince MPs on nuclear talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has failed to convince some lawmakers regardingthe talks between Tehran and the P5+1 countries over Tehrans nuclear program.

Zarif on Tuesday attended a session of the Parliament (Majlis)'sNational Security and Foreign Policy Committee torespondto questions raised by 15 legislatorsabout two main issues, namelythe Foreign Ministrys performance and the nuclear talks.

The Parliament representativesaccepted the ministers clarifications about the Foreign Ministrys performance on subjects such as the presence of foreign nationals, including the Afghans, in Iran as well asborder issues.

Zarif, however, failed to convince10 legislators who raised questions about the nuclear negotiations, particularly the Foreign Ministrys refusal to release a fact sheet regarding a mutual understanding reached between Tehran and the six global powers in Switzerland in April, and also the Iranian nuclear negotiators allegedkowtowingto the six countries' demands.

The foreign minister will therefore attend anopen session of Parliament toanswerquestions about the nuclear issue.

Speaking to the Fars News Agency, a member of the Parliament'sNational Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Mohammad Hassan Asafari, quoted Zarif as saying that no one dares to threaten Iran at the negotiating table.

Iran and the P5+1 countries - the US, Britain, France, China,Russia andGermany reached a mutual understanding in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.

Iran and the six countries are seeking to finalize a comprehensive deal on Tehrans nuclear program based on the Lausanne statement by the end of June.

The Iranian lawmakers couldimpeach Zarif if he fails to convince them at the Parliament open session.
