MPs block plan to halt nuclear talks

A plan prepared by some lawmakers in response to the threat of using military action against Iran made by some US officials in their recent remarks was met with opposition from members of the Followers of Velayat, who are the majority faction in parliament.

The motion was supposed to be submitted to the Majlis presiding board on Sunday.

"The most important issue discussed in the Sunday's meeting of the faction was the proposed plan to halt nuclear negotiations and the members voted overwhelmingly against it," a member of the faction, Gholamali Jafarzadeh Imenabadi, told ICANA.

The authors of the one-article plan named "The Plan to Prevent Humiliation of the Great Nation of the Islamic Iran" say they have written the bill based on recent remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to demand that negotiations and any other diplomatic contact with the United States should be cut unless the Islamic Republic receives a formal apology from US officials.

In a meeting with teachers on the occasion of National Teachers' Day in Tehran on Wednesday, the Leader denounced the US officials' move to threat Iran, saying, "I do not agree with negotiations under the specter of threat. Foreign policy officials and negotiators should scrupulously observe the main (principles) and red lines and defend the glory and grandeur of the Iranian nation, avoiding humiliation by not caving in to any imposed force or threat."

Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, who was also present at the faction's meeting, expressed support for the negotiating team, calling on the lawmakers to avoid "impulsive acts" which might undermine the talks.
