Tehran, May 6, IRNA - Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Marzieh Afkham on Wednesday warned about catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen.




Speaking in a weekly press conference on Wednesday, she urged the international community to prevent humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen.

Yemeni people are in critical need of water, electricity and other essential needs, the official underlined.

She noted that Iran will continue efforts for release of humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people and it will do its best to resolve the crisis there.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for more than a month to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are pounding residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

Elsewhere in her remarks, Afkham said that crew of Maersk ship are free.

Iran's Foreign Ministry had earlier announced that the MV Maersk Tigris � which was sailing with the flag of Marshal Islands last Tuesday � had been seized in Persian Gulf waters upon an order by a court in Tehran. This, it said, followed a lawsuit filed by Pars Tala'eyeh over a financial dispute with Maersk.

The ministry added that the ship will be free to go once its row with the Iranian company is resolved.
