Russian economy could benefit from full lift of anti-Iran sanctions - FM

Lavrov said that the full lifting of sanctions imposed against Iran over its controversial nuclear activities would be in line with Russia's national interests and would benefit the Russian economy.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) The full lifting ofsanctions imposed againstIran overits controversial nuclear activities would be inline withRussia's national interests and would benefit the Russian economy, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Argumenty I Fakty Russian weekly.

"Russian diplomacy made a significant contribution tothe achievement ofthe Lausanne framework agreement onthe settlement ofissues related tothe Iranian nuclear program. We believe that further progress inthis direction, the swift lifting ofsanctions againstIran restrictions imposed bythe UN Security Council, aswell asall unilateral restrictions fully meets our national interests," Lavrov said.

According tothe Russian Foreign Minister, the easing oftensions aroundIran would benefit Russia's bilateral trade and economic ties withthe country.

The preliminary deal onthe Iranian nuclear issue was struck betweenTehran and the P5+1 group ofinternational mediators, which include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany earlier inApril, aftermarathon talks inthe Swiss city ofLausanne.As part ofthe deal, Iran will not build new enrichment facilities or heavy water reactors for15 years, and will also limit its stockpile ofenriched uranium while abiding byenhanced transparency procedures.

In return, the United States and the European Union promised togradually lift all nuclear-related sanctions imposed againstIran. The UN Security Council will only partially lift its sanctions, withthe existing restrictions onconventional arms and ballistic missiles aswell ascore UN provisions dealing withthe transfer ofsensitive technologies and activities toremain inplace. US anti-Iran sanctions forterrorism, human rights abuses and ballistic missiles have not been cancelled either.

The lifted sanctions could be re-imposed if Iran fails tofollow throughwith all ofits commitments.

The P5+1 and Iran plan tohold a new roundof talks inVienna onApril 24. A final agreement betweenIran and the P5+1 is due byJune 30, 2015.
