Berlin, April 20, IRNA - Germany is mediating between Iran and Saudi Arabia aimed at finding a political solution to the escalating conflict in Yemen, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the German ARD broadcasting network.




My deputy foreign minister visited this week the Mideast region, including Iran and Saudi Arabia, trying to look at ways for a political settlement of the Yemeni crisis, Steinmeier said.

He stressed only Tehran and Riyadh were able to bring the Yemeni conflict parties to the negotiation table.

Steinmeier urged an international peace conference on Yemen, saying Oman could be a likely host of such a meeting.

He reiterated only a political -- and not a military solution -- could restore peace in Yemen.

Asked about the situation in Syria, Steinmeier said the main focus should currently be on defeating Daesh in Iraq and only after that a political solution could be sought in Syria.
