WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US President Barack Obama discussed ina phone conversation onMonday withthe Sultan ofOman Qaboos al Said the interim framework agreement onIrans nuclear program, the White House announced ina statement.
The President [Obama] spoke today withSultan Qaboos al Said ofOman toshare details ofthe political framework reached betweenthe P5+1, the EU, and Iran ona Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction regarding Irans nuclear program, the release, issued onMonday, said.
Obama pledged the United States commitment toworking withOman and other regional partners toaddress Irans destabilizing activities inthe region.
The President extended an invitation forthe Sultan tojoin the other leaders ofthe Gulf Cooperation Council atCamp David this spring tofurther these consultations, the statement added.The framework deal was struck onApril 2 aftermarathon talks betweenIran and a group ofsix major world powers, including the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany. A final detailed agreement is due byJune 30, 2015.
As part ofthe deal, Iran will not build new enrichment facilities or heavy water reactors for15 years, and will also limit its stockpile ofenriched uranium while abiding byenhanced transparency procedures. The number ofcentrifuges operating inIran will be cut bymore thantwo-thirds inten years.
In return, the United States and the European Union promised togradually lift all nuclear-related sanctions imposed againstIran. The UN Security Council will only partially lift its sanctions, withthe existing restrictions onconventional arms and ballistic missiles aswell ascore UN provisions dealing withthe transfer ofsensitive technologies and activities toremain inplace.
