Commander voices satisfaction in Fordo air defense development

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli lauded the progress made in the deployment of air defense systems at Iran's Fordo nuclear site.

"The expansion and development of missile, artillery, radar and optic systems at Fordo Air Defense system is praiseworthy," Brigadier General Esmayeeli said during a visit to Fordo Air Defense site in central Iran on Monday.

He reiterated that Iran's defense sites and Air Defense systems have been considerably expanded and updated in recent years.

"The mission of the Air Defense is the same in times of war and peace and it continues moving on the same path as the brave staff of the country's Air Defense unit bear the important responsibility of safeguarding the country's achievements in different fields," he added.

Fordo enrichment facility hosts Iran's uranium enrichment to the purity level of 20% which is needed for fueling a research reactor in Tehran which produces radioisotopes for medical purposes.

After Iran and the six world powers struck a transient deal in November 2013, the western media claimed that Iran's new president Hassan Rouhani was willing to shut down its nuclear facility if the West agreed to lift Islamic republic's sanctions.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi strongly rejected western media reports claiming that Tehran has raised a proposal to the West to close its Fordo underground uranium enrichment facility near the Central city of Qom for lifting sanctions against the country.

"The closure of Fordo site is a sheer lie," Salehi told reporters at the end of a cabinet meeting in Tehran in September 2013.

The facility enriches 5-percent-grade uranium now after Tehran took up to suspend enrichment to the 20 percent level under the November 2013 interim deal.
