Kerry doubts possibility of reaching agreement with Iran in near future

Kerry said that he is not certain that an agreement with Tehran on Iran's controversial nuclear program could be reached at this point.


LAUSANNE, March 30 (Sputnik) US Secretary ofState John Kerry is not certain that an agreement withTehran onIran's controversial nuclear program could be reached atthis point, Kerry told RIA Novosti.

Speaking inLausanne, Kerry said he was not sure that the deal was possible atthe current stage innegotiations.

Iran and the P5+1 group, which includes Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany started yet another roundof talks onthe Iran nuclear issue inthe Swiss city ofLausanne onThursday.

According toIranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is Tehran's envoy atthe talks, Iran is demanding that all sanctions and UN resolutions imposing crippling restrictions againstTehran be scrapped aspart ofits nuclear deal withmajor world powers.Meanwhile the West is trying toget Iran tosignificantly limit its uranium enrichment, so that there is a guarantee that its nuclear program is not aimed atdeveloping nuclear weapons.

Initially, Tehran insisted onhaving atleast 10,000 centrifuges, butin February the United States proposed tocut this number to6,500.

Iran and the P5+1 group have held several rounds oftalks onTehran's nuclear program inrecent years withlimited results. The long-term agreement has tobe reached byJuly 2015. A political framework deal needs tobe worked outby Tuesday, March 31.
