The top diplomats of France, the European Union and the United Kingdom spoke positively about the meeting with the Iranian foreign minister in Brussels on Monday evening, saying that the talks produced certain progress.
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Federica Mogherini, the foreign policy chief for the 28-member European Union, said the meeting included a discussion of the future nuclear deal’s technicalities and should help move the P5+1 nuclear talks forward.
“I am confident that this meeting will help advance the negotiations in the coming days and weeks,” Mogherini said. “We discussed all the remaining open gaps.”
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France also finds the talks useful and hopes that the remaining issues on Tehran’s controversial nuclear program will be resolved.UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said that although the sides had “very good discussions” and achieved certain progress, there is still a lot of work to be done.
The talks, also attended by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, come as the six world powers struggle to reach a nuclear agreement with Tehran.
The deal would lift international economic sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program and increased monitoring of Iranian nuclear facilities.
The deadline for a political agreement is the end of March, while a comprehensive framework nuclear deal should be reached by June 30.
