TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham lashed out at the US for imposing new sanctions against Venezuela, saying that unilateral sanctions are doomed to failure.

Earlier on Monday, US President Barack Obama issued a new Executive Order against Venezuela aimed at interfering in the countrys politics.

Obama declared Venezuela a national security threat," sanctioning seven individuals and expressing concern about the Venezuelan governments treatment of political opponents.

Speaking on Saturday, Afkham said the US move is rejected, adding,The Islamic Republic of Iran supports Venezuela as an independent and effective country in the Latin America.

She further slammed the new sanctions against Caracas, and said, "The era of (imposing) sanctions (against countries) is now over."

The policy of imposing unilateral sanctions is a failed policy, futility of which has been proved, Afkham added.

Also in response to the order, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro framed the US sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials as a bid to topple him, and his government on Saturday mobilized 80,000 soldiers and 20,000 civilians as part of a 10-day military drill.
