US president extends Iran sanctions for one more year

Obama extended existing sanctions on Iran for one more year on Wednesday.


WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US President Barack Obama onWednesday extended existing sanctions onIran forone more year despitecertain progress inTehran's actions tocurb its controversial nuclear program.

"certain actions and policies ofthe Government ofIran continue topose an unusual and extraordinary threat tothe national security, foreign policy, and economy ofthe United States," Obama said ina notice tothe Congress published bythe Office ofthe Press Secretary.

"Therefore, inaccordance withsection 202(d) ofthe National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for1 year the national emergency withrespect toIran declared inExecutive Order 12957," Obama wrote.

The US President also stressed the importance ofthe negotiations onthe Iranian nuclear program betweenTehran and the P5+1 group ofinternational mediators comprising the United States, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and France.

Obama referred tothe Joint Plan ofAction betweenthe P5+1 and Iran that went intoeffect onJanuary 20, 2014 as the first time ina decade that Iran has agreed toand taken specific actions that stop the advance and roll back key elements ofits nuclear program.Suspecting that Iran was developing nuclear weapons underthe guise ofa civilian program, the United States declared a national emergency withrespect toTehran onMarch 15, 1995 and renewed it every year since.

In November 2013, Tehran and P5+1 agreed toreach a long-term comprehensive deal withTehran guaranteeing the peaceful character ofits nuclear activities inexchange forlifting ofsanctions imposed againstIran. The deal must be agreed uponbefore July, 2015.

On Sunday Obama said inan interview withCBS News television that Tehran has not advanced its nuclear program inover a year sincethe beginning ofinternational negotiations.
