BERLIN (AP) -- Germany's foreign minister is heading to the U.S. for talks with American officials at a critical phase of the nuclear negotiations with Iran and the Ukraine crisis.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement Wednesday that he would meet with Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice, as well as other officials, for talks on both matters as well as the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State group.

Steinmeier says their position is strongest "if Europe and the U.S. act together, if Berlin and Washington act in concert."

Germany is one of the six nations leading the negotiations with Iran over its nuclear ambitions, and Chancellor Angela Merkel and Steinmeier played key roles in pushing Russia and Ukraine to agree to a cease-fire last month in Minsk.
