WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The US Senate must be given authority toapprove or reject the nuclear agreement being negotiated betweenthe United States, other members ofthe P5+1 group, and Iran, US Senate Republicans told Sputnik onTuesday.

Any deal withIran needs tocome throughthe process ofan approval inthe Senate, Senator John Barrasso told Sputnik. Any deal that President [Barack] Obama wants tocome upwith needs tobe approved inCongress bythe Senate.

Barrasso expressed his views followingIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus speech toa joint session ofUS Congress onTuesday morning. Netanyahu requested inhis speech that Congress use its oversight toreject a bad deal withIran.

Senator Marco Rubio told Sputnik that Netanyahus speech underlined the arguments forwhy the Obama administrations nuclear deal will be bad forthe world, not just Israel.

Rubio is a sponsor ofnew legislation that would require the US President tosubmit the agreement withIran tothe US Senate forapproval. [The bill] calls forcongressional authorization ofa deal and outlines what the parameters ofan acceptable deal would look like, Rubio said.

On Friday, the two leading senators onthe US Foreign Relations Committee introduced legislation withbipartisan support that would give Congress the right toapprove or reject any final agreement reached withIran overits nuclear program.

Barrasso said he supports the legislation, butnoted that Obama has already threatened toveto it. He thinks hes the one man band, Barrasso added.

US Secretary ofState John Kerry appealed toCongress this week togive the administration leeway tonegotiate a deal withIran.

The P5+1, comprising Germany, Russian, the United Kingdom, France, China and the United States, and Iran, are working towardsa comprehensive political framework fora nuclear agreement this week inVienna, ahead ofthe late March deadline imposed bynegotiators.
