Ministry to promote World's Book Capital in Iran

Tehran, Feb 25, IRNA -- Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance seeks to promote the culture of book reading so that one of the Iranian cities can be selected as the World's Book Capital.




Speaking in a meeting with Ayatollah Sheikh-Ali Khatami, the representative of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in Zanjan province, Culture Minister Ali Jannati said more efforts, precise planning and considerable time is required to achieve this goal.

Referring to the selection of Ahvaz as the country's book capital, he noted Neyshabour and Gonbad-e Kavous were other candidates which met all the requirements and criteria.

'In the festival to select the country's book capital, we evaluated 620 villages with public libraries and we chose 10 of them as bibliophile regions.'

He said 23 provinces participated in the event, adding the ministry plans to hold the festival annually and change the country's book capital.

Speaking at the same gathering, Ayatollah Khatami appreciated the innovation and efforts of Zanjan province's Culture and Islamic Guidance Department in holding the National Festival of Zaynab bint Ali (PBUH) titled 'Magnificence of Endurance'.

He noted the participation of the people of the province in the mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussein (PBUH) has become a model for the whole country.

Also, Jamshid Ansari, the provincial governor-general, said statistics show that Zanjan ranks among the top provinces in terms of book reading.
