Tehran, Feb 22, IRNA Head of Research Center of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said on Sunday that the problems in Afghanistan should be resolved by its people without interference of foreign countries.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan Nicholas Haysom in Tehran on Sunday.

Iran and Afghanistan share many commonalities and Iran backs restoration of peace and calm to Afghanistan, he said.

Iran has given shelter to millions of Afghan refugees in the past 40 years and treated them in a good manner, he said.

All countries sharing borders with Afghanistan are ready to help the country resolve its problems, he said.

Referring to formation of terrorist groups in the region, he said after emergence of Daesh Takfiri group some other extremist groups joined them, Velayati said.

Grounds for emergence of new extremist groups in Afghanistan are prepared, he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always sought restoration of stability to Afghanistan and backed its legitimate government, he said.

Nicholas Haysom, for his part, said countries such as Iran and Afghanistan are considered close allies in terms of political, social and economic issues.

He also lauded Iran's significant role in holding elections in Afghanistan, fighting drug trafficking and hosting Afghan refugees, he said.

The country's problems should be resolved through dialogue and with reliance on Afghan forces and the new Afghan government has created suitable grounds to attain this goal, Haysom said.
