Iranian nuclear power station Bushehr and the Indian Kudankulam NPP topped the "Nuclear energy" category as the modern technologies they use produce cleaner and more effective sources of energy.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The Russian-backed Iranian nuclear power station Bushehr and the Kudankulam Indian nuclear power plant projects were named projects ofthe year 2014 bythe US Power Engineering magazine inthe "Nuclear energy" category.

The editors claim that these projects represent global nuclear trends asthe modern technologies they use produce cleaner and more effective sources ofenergy.

When judging the finalists, the magazine considered "capacity, the technology, and the projects' impact onthe industry and onthe communities inwhich they were installed."

The Bushehr plant's construction, initially planned bythe German company Kraftwerk Union AG, faced a series ofdelays due tosanctions imposed onIran bythe United States and its allies. When Germany refused tocontinue working onthe project, inAugust 1992, Russia and Iran signed an agreement toconstruct the nuclear station, and inJanuary 1995 the countries signed a contract stipulating the completion ofthe construction ofthe first bloc.

Russia's Atomstroyexport managed tosubstitute Russian equipment duringthe construction, which was initially based onGerman plans. The first Bushehr reactor became operational in2011, withIran and Russia agreeing tobuild two other nuclear reactors inNovember 2014.

In 2012, the Nuclear Power Corporation ofIndia and Russia's nuclear agency Rosatom launched a much-delayed joint project tobuild the Kudankulam NPP atthe very southern tip ofthe Hindustan peninsula. Unit 1 ofthe plant reached full capacity inJuly, and Unit 2 is said tobe nearing completion.
