Russia playing constructive role in Iran nuclear negotiations - Obama

US President Barack Obama said that Russia has played a constructive role in the P5+1 negotiations to end Irans nuclear program.


WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Russia has played a constructive role inthe P5+1 negotiations toend Irans nuclear program, US PresidentBarack Obamasaid Monday ata joint press conference withGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"We could not be doing this [nuclear negotiations], were it not forthe incredible cohesion and unity thats been shown by the P5+1, which I should acknowledge includes Russia. This is an area where they have actually served a constructive role," Obama said.

The international community has long suspected Iran ofdeveloping a nuclear weapon underthe guise ofa civilian nuclear program, while Tehran claims its program is peaceful.In November 2013, Iran and the P5+1 group, which includes China, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, started negotiations onan agreement that would guarantee the peaceful nature ofTehrans nuclear program inexchange forthe lifting ofsanctions onIran. The talks resulted only inan interim agreement.

At November 2014 talks inVienna, the negotiating parties again failed towork outa comprehensive deal, instead extending negotiations fora political deal byMarch and a final technical deadline forreaching an agreement toJuly 2015.
