Iran expects Russia to honor contract on delivery of S-300 missile systems

Russia suspended the contract in 2010 following a UN Security Council resolution to stop the sale of arms to Iran due to its controversial nuclear energy program.
MOSCOW, January 27 (RIA Novosti) Iran expects Russia tomeet its contractual obligations todeliver the S-300 air defense systems, canceled byMoscow afterinternational sanctions were imposed onthe country, Iranian Ambassador toRussia Mehdi Sanaei told RIA Novosti inan interview Tuesday.Iran continues toview the S-300 contract aslegitimate and not a subject ofinternational sanctions asit was signed beforethe introduction ofsanctions and the [S-300] is a defensive rather thanan offensive system, Sanaei said.

Russia agreed in2007 toaccept $800-million fromIran todeliver five S-300 surface-to-air missile defense systems.

Iran is still expecting the implementation ofthe contract. We hope that the [recent] visit of [Russian Defense Minister Sergei] Shoigu toTehran is a good sign, the Iranian ambassador said.

Russia suspended the contract in2010 followinga UN Security Council resolution tostop the sale ofarms toIran due toits controversial nuclear energy program.

In the wake ofthe canceled contracts, Iran sued Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport atthe OSCE Court ofConciliation and Arbitration inGeneva, Switzerland. Moscow has offered Tehran a settlement, promising todeliver additional Tor-M1E SAM missile systems ata later, unspecified date.

According tothe Center forAnalysis ofWorld Arms Trade, Russia has lost outon $1113 billion forthe sale ofarms toIran because ofthe sanctions.
