France, Iran and Iraq shine in para-archery

Dubai France, Iran and Iraq clinched gold medals as the the first Fazza International Para-Archery Competition-2015 concluded on Sunday evening at the Dubai Club for the Disabled.
The event was organised and supervised by the Dubai Club for the Disabled and the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center in cooperation with the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare, Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Paralympic Committee.

In the recurved bow for womens category, Brigitte Dubuque of France won gold, Zahra Nemathi of Iran silver, and Inor Restmova of Azerbaijan bronze.

Rouham Shahbjor of Iran won gold in the mens recurved bow event as compatriot Stephen Gilbert landed in silver spot, and Rajesh Dobsng of India the bronze.

Mens compound bow competition witnessed the impressive Frenchman Philip Horner going home with the gold, while his team-mate Eric Pereira came second, and Jerry Klich of the Czech Republic third.

Worood Al Murshidi of Iraq won the gold medal on Saturday evening in the womens compound bow.

Brigitte, ranked fourth internationally, praised the facilities and competition standards here in Dubai, while world number two Zahra, said: Im delighted to participate in the first Fazza International Para-Archery Competition, which will greatly encourage and stimulate the development of this important sport in the UAE. The UAE players performed extremely well during the tournament and I wish them success and further progress.

Qasim Hamdan, head of the Iraqi delegation, expressed pride over the gold medal won by Worood saying the officiating standards in the UAE were of high class.

Worood said: Such events enable Emirati archers to interact with and compete alongside the worlds best and gain valuable international experience.

The closing ceremony was attended by Saeed Hareb Al Falahi, secretary general of the Dubai Sports Council, Khalid Midfa, assistant secretary general of the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare; Thani Juma Berregad, chairman of the organising committee Fazza Championships for People with Disability; and Jassim Mohammed, head of Fazza Championships at The Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center.

Souad Ibrahim Darwish, director of Fazza Championships, Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center, praised the high level of organisation and expressed her appreciation for the organising committee.

Although only two players from the UAE took part in the tournament, it was a good opportunity for them to compete at an international level and Im sure the experience will help boost their confidence. We will work on increasing the number of UAE players as well as the number of the participating teams in the next editions of the championship, Souad said.
