At least eight people have been killed and several others wounded in a bomb attack near a military base north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, official sources say.
According to Iraqi officials, an unknown number of bombers detonated their explosives near the military base in the Taji area, north of Baghdad, killing eight people and injuring some 17 others on Thursday.

In a similar incident on January 20, bomb explosions rocked two major Shia neighborhoods of Baghdad, leaving eight people dead and dozens more wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the Thursday attack, but such terror assaults are usually blamed on the ISIL Takfiri group, which has seized much of Iraqs Sunni Arab heartland.

Iraqi troops, backed by Kurdish fighters and volunteer forces, have been engaged in fierce clashes with the ISIL extremists, making numerous gains against them on several fronts, but the Takfiri militants still hold significant territory.

This is while a US-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes on ISIL positions in Iraq. However, such raids have so far failed to dislodge the terrorists.

According to the UN, more than 1,100 people were killed and over 1,800 others wounded in terror attacks across the violence-torn Arab state last month, making December 2014 the deadliest month since 2008.
