Iran, Oman to hold joint naval drill: Iran Navy cmdr.
The naval forces of Iranand Oman plan to hold a joint rescue and relief drill in the waters south of Iran in the coming months.
Irans Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyarisaid on Tuesday that the maritime drill is scheduled to be held east of the Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman some time between April 21 and May 21.

The Iranian commander described Iran and Oman as two main players in providing security for the region.

Iran and Oman have so far held several naval relief and rescue drills aimed at enhancing readiness for providing relief services, conducting rescue operations, improving the level of regional cooperation and exchanging experience.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has also been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 in order to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.

Irans Navy has managed to foil several attacks on both Iranian and foreign tankers during its missions in international waters.
