Obama says chances of diplomatic Iran nuclear deal less than 50%

US President Barack Obama said that the probability of diplomatic resolution of the Iranian nuclear crisis is less than 50 percent.


WASHINGTON, January 16 (Sputnik) The probability ofdiplomatic resolution ofthe Iranian nuclear crisis is less than50 percent, US President Barack Obama said duringa joint press conference withUK Prime Minister David Cameron onFriday.

Chances that we can have a diplomatic deal [with Iran] are probably less than50/50," Obama said adding that the likelihood ofnegotiations collapsing is very high."

Obama added that even if the nuclear deal withIran is reached and the West is assured that Iran does not possess any nuclear weapons, the United States still has a lot ofproblems withIran on state-sponsored terrorism, ontheir rhetoric towardsIsrael, their financing ofHezbollah, and there are differences inrespect toSyria.During the Vienna talks ofIran and the P5+1 group including Russia, the United States, Britain, France, China and Germany held inNovember 2014, the sides failed toelaborate a comprehensive deal and extended negotiations untilJuly 1, 2015.

A plenary meeting ofIran and the P5+1 group ofinternational mediators will be held onJanuary 18 inGeneva, Switzerland.
