TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham announced that the nuclear talks between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) are first aimed at reaching a mutual political understanding.
"During the extension period, both sides first (try to) reach an agreement on a political framework to pave the ground for an agreement on details and technical aspects of the issue," Afkham told reporters in her weekly press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

Asked about Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's trip to Geneva, she said, "Mr. Zarif will have meetings on the latest situation of the nuclear negotiations and will have the necessary consultations in this regard."

Noting that Zarif's visit to Europe will last a few days, Afkham said he will have talks with his European counterparts and after meeting US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday, the Iranian top diplomat will have some discussions with other officials.

Meantime, she said sanctions are a worn-out policy, and asked the White House to adopt a logical approach towards Iran's nuclear issue.

The 10th round of negotiations between Iran and the six world powers was held in Vienna from November 18 to 24, where the seven nations decided to extend the talks until July after they failed to strike an agreement.

The next round of the nuclear talks between the two sides will be held at the level of deputy foreign ministers in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 18.

Iran's nuclear chief announced on Friday that Tehran had done its utmost efforts to bring maximum transparency to its nuclear program and remove the alleged concerns of the Western states, stressing that the world powers had been left with no more excuse to avoid a final agreement with Iran.

Zarif on Tuesday called on the European Union to play a more active role in the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the G5+1.

"The EU can play a more active role in reaching a comprehensive nuclear agreement (between Iran and the G5+1)," he said in a meeting with the new Greek ambassador to Tehran.

The Iranian foreign minister underlined the important role of the EU member-states in helping Iran and the G5+1 to strike a final deal.

On his upcoming meeting with Kerry, Zarif said, "Since there are no political relations between Iran and the US, the meeting will be held in Geneva and our negotiations with the US are just limited to the nuclear issue."

Zarif said on Sunday that his meeting with Kerry was aimed at studying the extent to which the nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, held within the framework of nuclear talks between Iran and the world powers, had produced success.

He also said he might have meetings with EU officials during his European tour.
