US President Barack Obama says Washington is focused on efforts to reach a comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran over the Islamic Republics nuclear program.
The White House, in a statement, said Obama made the remarks in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

The United States is focused on reaching a comprehensive deal with Iran that prevents Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and verifiably assures the international community of the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program, the statement read.

The International Atomic Energy Agency that supervises Iran's nuclear activities has never concluded that there has been deviation in Tehran's nuclear program towards militarism.

Obama also underscored the United States enduring commitment to the security of Israel and the importance of continuing close cooperation with Israel on this issue.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are set to hold talks on the Islamic Republics nuclear program in the Swiss city of Geneva on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters while on a visit to India on Monday, Kerry expressed hope that his upcoming meeting with Zarif would lay the groundwork for negotiations on Irans nuclear program to move further forward.

Nuclear negotiators from Iran and the P5+1 group the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany wrapped up their latest round of talks in Geneva on December 17, 2014.

The three-day Geneva discussions were held almost three weeks after Tehran and the six countries failed to meet a November 24 deadline for reaching a comprehensive deal despite having moved forward on the issue.

Given the progress, the two sides agreed to extend their discussions for seven more months until July 1, 2015. They also agreed that the interim deal they had signed in Geneva in November 2013 would remain in place during the extended negotiations.

Angered by the historic interim deal between Iran and its negotiating partners, Israelhas been lobbying over the past months to thwart a final accord.

In a televised program on Saturday night, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Ali Akbar Salehi, said that Iran and the six world powers were on the verge of clinching a comprehensive nuclear deal back in November 2014, but Israeli lobbies blocked the deal.
